Thanks Susana. The little squares are called baffle blocks. They dissipate the energy of fast flowing water when the river is running high. It helps prevent soil erosion.

Excellent series, as usual, Paul. There's a waterfall up at Kinder Scout which, in winter and when there's a gale blowing appears to be flowing uphill.
